Panchakarma is basically a bio-cleansing regimen, which facilitates the body system for better bioavailability of the pharmacological therapies, besides achieving homeostasis of doshas. It also increases the acceptability of the body to various dietary regimens and use of rejuvenation therapy (rasayana) for promoting health as well as for therapeutic regimens. These therapies help in the elimination of disease causing factors and maintain the equilibrium of body tissues (dhatus) and humours (doshas).

Advantages :

It is primary purification and detoxification treatment. Panchakarma means “Five therapies”. These five therapeutic treatments that help in eliminating toxins from the body are

  1. VAMANA
  2. VIRECHANA
  3. BASTI
  4. NASYA
  5. RAKTAMOKSHANA.

The series of these five therapies helps remove deep rooted stress and illness causing toxins from the body while balancing the doshas(energies that govern all biological functions).

Before conducting any panchakarma treatment, your body is well prepared by ‘purva karmas’ such as massage, ghee drinking, steam therapy.

THERAPEUTIC STEPS OF PANCHAKARMA:-

  1. Dipana-Pachana chikitsa
  2. Purvakarmas(Snehana & Swedana)
  3. Pradhana Karma(Panchakarmas/Sodhana therapy)
  4. Paschat Karmas(Diets and Regimen)

PACHANA-DIPANA CHIKITSA

This step should be done before any purification therapy, as it helps to alleviate amavastha and make the person and disease fit for purification therapy. The other benefits include, it enhances digestive fire, helps to clear metabolic channels, enhance the absorptive capacity and efficiency of koshtha, minimize the chance of complications during purification therapy etc. This can be done by administration of herbal powders or giving herbal decoctions according to condition.

PURVA KARMAS

These are the preparatory procedures. Usaually before purification therapy, snehapana is taking after getting proper digestive fire as achapana and the sneha for the same should be select according to the nature of diseases and body constitution of patient. After snehapana procedure, sudation should be done depending upon the conditions.

PRADHANA KARMA.

Once the three steps of purva karma are completed the pradhana karma commences. The procedures of pradhana karma are given here to in the order that they are typically performed.

PART OF PRADHANA KARMA

  1. Vamana karma(therapeutic emesis)
  2. Virechana karma (therapeutic purgation )
  3. Basthi karma (medicated enema)
  4. Nasyam karma (Nasal administration of medicaments)
  5. Raktha moksham (Blood letting)

Vamana (emesis)

Vamana is a medicated emesis therapy which removes kapha toxins collected in the body and respiratory tract.The given medicine had prevented to undergo digestion and offered directly to hrydayam will spread all over the body virtue of vyavayi, vikasi, ushna,tikshna qualities and removes and disaintegrates the doshas in the tissues and bring them to the amashayam.

Benefits:

Virechana (purgation)

It is induced medicated purgation therapy to cleanse the gastro intestinal tract. Which removes excess pitta toxins from the body . It is unique procedure that eliminates the endotoxins that’s are formed in the liver, unabsorbed residues of GIT resulted due to metabolic activities,things that are excreted through intestinal mucosa etc.

Benefits:

Basti (enema)

Basti considered as the mother of all pancha karma treatments. it cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the three vata, pitta,& kapha doshas through the colon. Medicated oils and herbal decoction is administrated as enema to clean the lower digestive tract and increase the muscle tone.

a) Sneha vasti:

It involves administration of medicated oil or ghee through the anus.

b) Kashaya vasti

Administration of medicated decotion through rectum is called kashaya vasti.

Benefits:

Nasyam

Administration of medicated oil through the nose to cleanse accumulated kapha toxins and excess mucus from the head and neck region.

Benefits:

Raktamoksha

Is an effective blood purification therapy. in which carefully controlled removal of small quantities of blood .bloodletting is conducted to neutralize the accumulated pitta toxins of many blood bone diseases.

Paaschat Karma

Post cleansing regimen after pradhana karma. Ie, rules to follow after main panchakarma . Samsarjana krama is the diet plan followed after vamana and virechana therapy. Since vamana and virechana tend to leave an impact on the internal lining of some parts of the digestive tract ,a special dietary regimen as advised for 7 days after completion of main procedure. Aim of samsarjana krama is to gradually bring the patient’s diet back to what he was accustomed before starting pancha karma. Paaschat karma includes
